Shoemaker Returns With A Set That Balances Nostalgia And Edginess
Rubber-faced comedian Craig Shoemaker returns in the Showtime stand-up special "Daditude" and it's good to see him again. I've followed the talented Shoemaker for more years than I care to admit. You might even say that we've officially pushed into middle age together. It's always a bit concerning when an edgy comedian approaches maturity and turns into a proud family man. There is a possibility that he'll simply become too mellow to push the boundaries of comedy impropriety. With Shoemaker naming this tour "Daditude," I was afraid we might be seeing a kindler and gentler act than we've become accustomed to. And in minor ways, that is somewhat true. Shoemaker certainly embraces his age and much of his material deals with this new disconnect with a younger population. In fact, in a running gag, he explains many of his jokes to an eighteen year old in the audience because his references are generally before her time.
In that way, Shoemaker's reflections have a...
not that fresh but still very funny!
I'll start by saying I think Craig Shoemaker is terrific, he is super funny,a great singer actually, capable of incredible impressions and my favorite thing about him is his knack for nostalgia and contrasting the childhoods of the baby boomers with the current generations. I should also add I was at this show when it was filmed here in Southern California ,nearly two years ago.
The reason I titled my review as I did , is simply that in the three stand up DVDs Craig has out... he repeats his best bits , often. In fact about 75% is the same disc to disc and show to show , with slight variations. Unlike Carlin, Miller, Reagan, Titus and others who work for a couple of years polishing new material and then FILM THAT SHOW, Craig is always filming a version of his only show.... BUT IT IS A REALLY FUNNY ACT!
I guess what I'm saying is, if you don't have one of his DVDs... starting here is as good as anywhere. If you already own...
he cant miss!!!
I give this one as gifts!!! We all need a gift of laughter once in awhile...Seen him 3 times in person!!
